Meet the Leadership Team

William H. W. Patterson

William “B” Patterson guides and oversees the efforts of both NewBridge Services and its sister company, Cumberland Surety. Both organizations work together on the expansion and deployment of their partner Indemnity National Insurance Company.

These responsibilities require B to direct NewBridge to perform with both the flexibility of a new organization and the stable experience of a seasoned industry player.

Over the past 28 years, B has worked in virtually all departments and areas helping develop the programs that both NewBridge and Cumberland use today.

Prior to being named President of NewBridge Services on January 1, 2018, he had been Vice President of the company for five years. During this period, NewBridge, as a consultant and contractor, was involved in several large reclamation projects. B organized the field forces to budget, plan, and implement the projects. He managed staff, equipment, outside vendors, and contractors. He performed these duties for projects where NewBridge Services was acting as a consultant and/or the primary contractor in the completion of reclamation efforts for operators, insurance companies, government agencies, and engineering companies.

He served as Senior Underwriter for NewBridge for ten years (2003-2013) performing the day-to-day management of the reclamation bond underwriting department. These duties included a financial review of accounts, on-site technical oversight of field operations and risk assessment, bond release management, and coordinating accounts receivable collections.

Before that, B worked as an Underwriter for Cumberland Surety
as it was expanding into an eight-state regional operation. A licensed agent, B helped grow the contract surety department to annual premiums of $4.5million. Opening 3 branch offices, he was responsible for overseeing more than 50 agency relationships in the new territory. He also maintained a significant book of direct written business

B graduated from Centre College in 1986 and joined Cumberland Surety in 1989.

Steve Hohmann

Steve Hohmann is responsible for managing NewBridge Services' overall regulatory policy activities to ensure its consistency with the business needs of the company.

Additionally, he monitors the public policies issues in Congress and relevant regulatory agencies that serve our industry. This includes developing legal, regulatory and congressional strategies.

Prior to joining our company in 2016, Steve served as Commissioner for the Kentucky Department for Natural Resources.

In 2016, Steve received the Kentucky Environmental Quality Commission’s annual award for outstanding public service.

As Commissioner, he supervised the daily operations of the Department. The Department employs over 600 people who regulate all mine reclamation and permitting, mine safety, and oil and gas operations within the Commonwealth and also administers the Kentucky forestry and conservation programs.

Steve has also chaired the Kentucky Oil and Gas Workgroup, a multi-stakeholder group that studied and recommended regulatory improvements to Kentucky’s oil and gas program that were enacted by the Kentucky General Assembly in 2015.

He has twice served as president of the National Association of Abandoned Mine Land Programs.

From 2012 to 2015, Steve was the Kentucky representative to the Interstate Mining Compact Commission.

Steve was also the recipient of the 2009 Stan Barnard Award, given by the National Association of Abandoned Mine Lands programs for outstanding contributions and dedication to the reclamation of abandoned mine lands nationwide.

Steve holds a BA in Political Science from Morehead State University with minors in History and Economics.

Keith B. Smith

Field Operations

Keith Smith has nearly 36 years of all-around experience in the mining industry. That includes hands-on experience mining experience and extensive history in the permitting and inspection/enforcement divisions of the Kentucky mining regulatory program.

Keith helps coordinate all NewBridge Services field representatives.

As a result of Keith’s unique skill set, he also performs required on-ground risk analyses in support of the reclamation bonding programs administered by Cumberland Surety.

Before joining our company in 2016, Keith worked for the Commonwealth of Kentucky in a variety of positions related to the mining industry.

He was Executive Director for the Office of the Reclamation Guaranty Fund where he was involved in the drafting of the state laws and regulations that are the foundation for the Fund, and was responsible for the implementation and management of the Fund in the first two and one-half years of its existence.

While serving in many capacities with the Commonwealth of Kentucky, Keith acquired a wealth of experience and knowledge regarding the operation and regulation of the coal industry, especially relating to reclamation operations and performance bonding.

His other positions for the Commonwealth included Environmental Reclamation Inspector, Environmental Permit Technician, Environmental Section Supervisor, Branch Manager, Assistant Director (Mine Reclamation and Mine Permits divisions) and Acting Director (Mine Reclamation division).
